Featuring H.E. Clare Fearnley – New Zealand Ambassador to China, Bejing; Jerry Clode – Founder, The Solution, Shanghai/Dunedin; Greg Au-Yeung – Senior Advisor Fudan University and former CIO (Greater China), Saxo Bank, Shanghai; facilitated by Associate Professor Laura Meriluoto – Dean(International), UC Business School.

Thinking beyond immediate business conditions, panelists will discuss the most significant future directions in China that New Zealand business should be monitoring now. The discussion will cover opportunities, trends and risks such as government policy directions, US-China and other key relationships, economic developments, environmental issues, consumer trends, technology advances, and other anticipated macro developments that our business community can’t afford to ignore as they plan their long-term China strategies.

The purpose of the Focus on Asia series is to bring together industry experts, alumni and academics to share insights with New Zealand organisations and individuals that are interested in developing or strengthening connections with Asia.

Clare Fearnley
New Zealand Ambassador to China @Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade
Clare Fearnley took up the role of New Zealand Ambassador to China in early May 2018, cross-accredited to Mongolia. Clare has just completed a three year term as Ambassador in Seoul (2015-2017), cross-accredited to Pyongyang. Her previous off-shore roles include Consul-General in Shanghai (1998-2002) and head of the New Zealand Commerce and Industry Office in Taipei (2004-2007), as well as working at the New Zealand Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva (1993-1996), cross-accredited to the United Nations Office in Nairobi. Early in her career she was seconded to the Canadian Foreign Ministry (1992). While working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Wellington, Clare was most recently Director-General for North Asia and before that was Director-General for Asia-Pacific Regional work. She has served as APEC and ASEAN Senior Official, as well as acting as Principal Legal Adviser and as Head of the Trade Law Unit, where she led international trade litigation.
Greg Au-Yeung
Senior Advisor @Fudan University
Greg is a seasoned banking technology professional with extensive experience across China, Hong Kong & Japan. He has a solid track record of pioneering, building & managing 3 sizeable Tech Development Centres, and initiation of 2 Start-ups (1 FinTech) in the mainland. He is currently CIO (Greater China) at Saxo Bank, an European FinTech with a China ambition. Prior to this, Greg has held senior executive positions at State Street, Morgan Stanley, ANZ & UBS. He has in-depth operating knowledge & talent insight across the financial industry. During his career, he has also been an entrepreneur setting up his own consultant firm, and partner of a Microfinance/P2P company acquired from AIG (China).
Jerry Clode
Founder @The Solution
Jerry Clode is recognised as a leading expert in China's consumer and digital culture. In a 20+ year career, he has helped iconic brands such as Disney, Budweiser and Unilever establish and localise in China. Jerry is one of the few and only Chinese language consumer interviewers of foreign origin, he speaks to over 200 local consumer each year. Most recently, Jerry has created Chinese brand names and strategies for many leading NZ brands, with NZTE, including Synlait, Rockit Apples, NZ Avocado and Zeffer Cider. His viewpoint is widely sought after by leading publications including the SCMP, Washington Post and Ad Age. Jerry has held senior roles in China, as well as London and Singapore. In London, he lead WP’s global Cultural Insight division, with a focus on brand strategy in emerging markets – China, Brazil and India. He is the consecutive recipient of China’s Digital A-List award in both 2017 and 2018.
