New Zealand’s fast-moving trade relationships with Asian economies have often followed a familiar path: conclude a free trade agreement, lead with primary produce exports, and deepen and expand the relationship on that firm foundation. But New Zealand does not yet have a bilateral or regional FTA with India, and prospects for securing one in the short to medium term look slim – prompting many to place the country in the too-hard basket, despite the enormous scale and exciting development of this unique emerging power. Is it time for a new approach?
