Relationships could be established and maintained face-to-face, facilities could be eyeballed and major issues could be resolved in-person. The COVID era has resulted in an ongoing halt to frictionless business travel. NZ’s ability to pay our way in the world has also been challenged by supply chain disruption, rising nationalism and stalled progress towards freer trade. The greater adoption of video conferencing and cloud technologies have been very helpful but these may be insufficient to mitigate all of the challenges faced. Government policies around border controls, vaccination and managed isolation may have a dominant role in determining our future. But beyond lobbying government, NZ businesses must also adapt to the new normal.
